GREENMANTRA Technologies will work with NCAT to demonstrate the long-term performance and benefits of waxes made from waste plastic to enhance asphalt across North America

BRANTFORD, ON [January 13, 2022] — GREENMANTRA Technologies and the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) have entered into a multi-year service agreement to complete ongoing testing that validates the long-term performance of GREENMANTRA’s CERANOVUS® specialty waxes in asphalt.  GREENMANTRA’s waxes are derived from 100% recycled plastics and function as performance-enhancing asphalt additives.

The asphalt industry is conservative when it comes to using new materials in roads and requires extensive performance demonstration before approving new materials. Partnering with the globally recognized asphalt authority at NCAT’s testing center will enable GREENMANTRA not only to test performance during blending and installation, but also throughout the entire pavement lifecycle.

“This multi-year agreement with the world-class team at NCAT will allow us to accelerate our efforts in the asphalt market to offer a proven, beneficial additive for widescale use in paving across North America,” explained Christy Sapp, GREENMANTRA’s Director for Global Market Development. “In addition to offering performance benefits, our specialty waxes offer GHG reduction through improved processing, reduced paving temperatures, material reduction opportunities, and enhanced pavement durability – and should ultimately contribute to extended life of roadways – a win-win for the environment and the asphalt industry.”

As a global authority in asphalt research and technology, NCAT works closely with the US Federal Highway Administration, state and local highway agencies, and the asphalt pavement industry to evaluate new materials and to develop new pavement construction materials and techniques.

“Using recycled plastics in asphalt could offer real benefits, but we need sound performance data to prove those benefits before putting this concept in practice,” says Dr. Fan Yin, an Assistant Director of NCAT. “GREENMANTRA’s waxes are one of the most extensively tested recycled plastic additives for asphalt paving applications to date, and we are excited to partner with GREENMANTRA to accelerate the evaluation and validation of the materials’ performance benefits to enable widescale, commercial adoption.”

Initial evaluation by NCAT suggests that the addition of a low dosage of GREENMANTRA’s sustainable waxes could potentially reduce pavement thickness by 10%, deliver the same fatigue cracking performance as a thicker pavement structure, reduce the material costs of the project, and extend asphalt coverage with a lower carbon footprint.

GREENMANTRA has the technology to pave the way to a more sustainable future by transforming waste plastics into a value-creating additive for asphalt applications. “Because our products are derived from 100% recycled plastics, each mile paved with GREENMANTRA’s additives has the potential to divert ~3 million plastic bags from landfill,” Sapp explained. “GREENMANTRA waxes are the right additive to do big things for pavement performance and the planet.”

 About GreenMantra Technologies

GREENMANTRA Technologies is a leader in advanced recycling that transforms waste plastics into value-creating specialty waxes and polymers. GREENMANRA’s products are used as performance enhancers and processing aids in roofing, asphalt roads, extruded plastic pipes, and other construction infrastructure applications with useful lifespans of 20-50+ years. In each application, GREENMANTRA improves product performance, provides a more efficient manufacturing process, and allows manufacturers to greatly increase the recycled content of their end products without sacrificing performance. GREENMANTRA annually diverts thousands of tonnes of waste plastic from our oceans and landfills into new applications.

About the National Center for Asphalt Technology

NCAT’s mission is to provide innovative, relevant, and implementable research, technology development and education that advances safe, durable and sustainable asphalt pavements. This work is supported by contracts with state departments of transportation, FHWA, the asphalt pavement construction industry and individual business enterprises. NCAT was established in 1986 as a cooperative venture between the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and Auburn University.
